Fall, Food & A Little Cannon Fire: Fort Ligonier Days

Fall, Food & A Little Cannon Fire: Fort Ligonier Days

There are fall festivals, and then there’s Fort Ligonier Days.

For three days every October, the normally charming little town of Ligonier, Pennsylvania, basically hands over Main Street to marching bands, historical reenactors, artisans, food vendors, live music, and tens of thousands of visitors. All of this happens with the Laurel Highlands showing off in full fall color in the background.

This year, Fort Ligonier Days returns October 9–11, commemorating the pivotal 1758 Battle of Fort Ligonier while turning downtown into one mighty big celebration.

So, SNOWBALLERS, if you’re headed to the Laurel Highlands in October, this is one weekend worth knowing about.

A History Lesson You’ll Want to Attend

First things first: Why Fort Ligonier?

The original fort was built in 1758 during the French and Indian War, and the Battle of Fort Ligonier was fought there that same year. Today, the reconstructed fort sits right in town, complete with artillery, buildings, wagons, and a museum filled with 18th-century artifacts, including items connected to a young George Washington. (Yep, THAT George Washington.)

Fort Ligonier Days evolved from that very history. A bicentennial celebration was held in 1958, complete with a visit from President Dwight Eisenhower, and the first festival followed in 1960. More than six decades later, it has grown into one of western Pennsylvania’s biggest fall traditions.

And thankfully, no one expects you to spend the weekend quietly reading historical markers. Fort Ligonier Days is more “party like it’s 1758” than history class.

Main Street Gets a Serious Makeover

During Fort Ligonier Days, the whole town gets in on it.

Vendor booths open throughout the festival, local merchants hold sidewalk sales, and live music fills stages around downtown. Meanwhile, Fort Ligonier hosts living-history activities, military encampments, and artillery demonstrations, giving visitors a much closer (and louder) look at what life around the fort might have been like.

Then there’s Saturday’s Grand Parade, the centerpiece of the weekend. Organizers estimate 50,000 to 60,000 people line the mile-long Main Street route to watch marching bands, military reenactors, floats, antique vehicles, tractors, and plenty more make their way through town.

And this year, Fort Ligonier Days is adding a little extra boom to the celebration. For the first time, Saturday night will end with a fireworks show! Families also have something new to check out with the addition of a dedicated Children’s Corner, packed with activities and entertainment for the younger history buffs.

So basically what we’re saying is, Ligonier does not believe in halfway celebrating this particular weekend.

Come Hungry. We Mean It.

We would be doing you a disservice if we talked about Fort Ligonier Days without discussing the food. The 2026 vendor lineup includes everything from pierogies and apple dumplings to barbecue, gyros, fresh-cut fries, pastries, kettle corn, and apple cider donuts, plus plenty of other festival food.

You’ll also find handpicked artists and makers throughout the festival, with everything from handmade goods to local crafts to browse between snacks. That feels like a perfectly respectable itinerary to us.

One practical SNOWBALLER tip: have a parking plan before you arrive. Festival parking is paid, with several designated lots around Ligonier and free shuttle service into the festival area. Pets and backpacks are not permitted in the festival area, so this is one occasion when a little planning ahead will save you some trouble. Be sure to check out the official Fort Ligonier Days schedule and visitor information.

Pressed for Time? Here’s the Breakdown:

  • When: October 9–11, 2026
  • Don’t miss: Saturday’s Grand Parade, living-history demonstrations, vendors, food, live music, and fireworks
  • Our advice: Come early, wear comfortable shoes, arrive hungry, and use the festival shuttle

There’s something pretty special about visiting a town that doesn’t just preserve its history but throws a three-day party around it. Add October foliage in the Laurel Highlands, and Fort Ligonier Days makes a mighty good excuse for a fall weekend in the mountains.

And after a day of parades, cannon fire, shopping, and more pierogies than you planned on eating, head back to a SNOWBALL PROPERTY and put your feet up. SNOWBALL may be newer to the Laurel Highlands, but we bring plenty of vacation-rental know-how from our sister company, BEACHBALL PROPERTIES, an Airbnb Superhost and Vrbo Premier Partner. Whether your vacation comes with mountain views or Gulf Coast waves, we know the best days away deserve a great place to come home to.
